Oshkosh Truck will pour $8.3 million into an expansion of a Minnesota garbage-truck and concrete-mixer factory used by its subsidiary, McNeilus. McGrath Means Moving

Three generations of McGraths have run McGrath Moving and Storage in Modesto, Calif., since its founding 50 years ago. Founder J.R. McGrath started making deliveries then on a bicycle and moved up to a pickup truck.

In the years since, the company has acquired a truck fleet and delivered to 48 states. Terry McGrath, J.R.'s son, became a full-time driver after high school. Now, he runs the company along with his son, Mike. The company handles local moves, as well as global moves in affiliation with Wheaton World Wide Moving.

One memorable McGrath customer is a man who put a new Cadillac in storage in 1976, intending to take it out 16 years later when his then-newborn son was old enough to get a driver's license. He still has not picked up the car and continues to pay for storage.

Mike McGrath says he enjoys meeting people on long hauls, which keep him out of Modesto for about half of the year. One way the McGraths have drummed up business is by wearing company T-shirts when they appeared, and lost, on the TV game show "Family Feud." The company may have a long future. Mike McGrath says Nicholas, his eight-year-old son, already "loves trucks." Modesto Bee Online (07/21/99); Swehla, Matt

    Product Roundup: Drowsy Driver Warning

TRW, a Cleveland-based automotive supplier, and Sweden's Biosys are jointly developing a biological sensor for a truck's steering wheel, seatbelt, and seat that will determine when drivers are too tired to stay on the road. Among the problems facing the companies is choosing the best way to alert sleepy drivers to their condition. Traffic World (07/19/99) Vol. 259, No. 3, P. 41; Hickley, Kathleen

Transport Company Dives Into Fish Mart

The transport company BAX Global is testing Baxmart.com, an online marketplace that will cut days and dollars off the fresh-seafood supply chain. Inforte Corp. used Microsoft Site Server 3.0 to develop the online system. Baxmart.com allows direct contact between seafood producers and buyers, taking the place of people who now act as go-betweens. Bax will profit from transportation as well as payments for handling transactions. In fact, it hopes to reap $2.5 million transportation revenue in a year's time by selling up to $12 million worth of seafood. The salmon producer Aquafarms is one client hoping to profit from Baxmart.com. Computerworld (07/19/99) Vol. 33, No. 29, P. 20; Deckmyn, Dominique
