In Pennsylvania, Bill Shuster vs. Alanna Hartzok: Why You Should Care

Each day this week, three times per day, Transport Topics reporter Eugene Mulero looks at one of 15 key congressional races that affect transportation interests, and explains Why You Should Care.

Today: Pennsylvania’s 9th District – Incumbent Republican Bill Shuster vs. Democratic challenger Alanna Hartzok.

Rep. Bill Shuster, the Republican chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is a central player in the ongoing highway funding debate. He led the passage of an extension of a 2012 highway law that expires in the spring. Notably, Shuster has sought to persuade the tea party bloc in Congress to realize value in federal investments in the transportation system. The Rothenberg Political Report rates the contest as "currently safe Republican" with Shuster ahead of his Democratic challenger, Alanna Hartzok. Hartzok has pledged to increase airline safety and fund a long-term sustainable national transportation system. She has accused Shuster of contributing to the legislative gridlock in Congress.
