OOIDA Urges Truck Drivers to Strictly Follow Safety Rules

Spencer Says Such Action Could Slow Freight Hauls

he Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is calling on its 95,000 members, and all other commercial drivers, to strictly follow all federal truck safety regulations during June to highlight the pressures truckers face from carriers, shippers and receivers to bend the rules.

OOIDA estimates that if drivers strictly complied with the hours-of-service rules it would slow freight movement by 30%.

“It’s very hard for truckers to resist the all-too-common pressures to find ways around the safety regulations,” OOIDA Vice President Todd Spencer said in an interview with Transport Topics.



Spencer said the pressure was primarily coming from shippers and receivers, not motor carriers.
