Officials Say Canada Opposes Bridge Plan

anada’s Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness will not support a plan by the owner of the Ambassador Bridge to merge U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection booths at the busiest border crossing for trucks at Detroit-Windsor, Ontario, an agency spokesman said.

Anne McLellan, Canada’s Public Safety Minister, opposes the plan because it would “create only one port of entry,” which could compromise the ability of Canada’s border services employees to adequately perform their duties, her spokesman Alex Swann said.

He said “the Canadian government would have to be the one to give approval to move the workers to the U.S. side and, at this time, no such legislation exists.”
