FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A long-term solution to chassis woes at the Port of New York-New Jersey could come closer this week when a task force aimed at reducing truckers’ equipment troubles votes to approve a portwide pool, a top shipping official said.

John Nardi, president of the New York Shipping Association, told Transport Topics during the National Industrial Transportation League conference here that a committee of the Port Performance Task Force will decide Thursday on which type of “grey” chassis pool to select to operate throughout the port. The Equipment Committee, which Nardi is the chairman of, has been reviewing how to upgrade chassis flow at the third-largest U.S. port.

Nardi said the pool, which would cover all five New York-New Jersey port terminals, will either be a “market pool” or “pool of pools.” Either approach would allow truckers to use and return that equipment without restrictions that are in place now, typically imposed by ocean carriers or lessors. The difference between the two pool options is in the management structure.

A total of 38,000 chassis would be available in the pool, Nardi told TT.

He said members of the task force, formed by port management, “came together and realized that what we have is not sustainable. We are working toward a common goal here.”
