NAFTA Surface Trade Rises 2.7% in May

Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 2.7% in May from the same month last year but dipped 0.2% from April, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners increased to $99 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

Trucks carried 60.8% of the total value of the freight traded among the Nafta partners.

Trucks accounted for 55.2% of the $54.8 billion in trade with Canada and 67.8% of the $43.8 billion traded with Mexico.



Freight moved by rail, which accounted for 15.1% of total trade, rose 11.3% year-over-year, BTS said.

Truck imports to the United States from the two countries declined 1.7% year-over-year to $29 billion, while exports rose 2.1% to $31.1 billion.

Rail imports rose 13.4% to $9.5 billion, while exports rose 7.7% to $5.4 billion. Pipeline imports rose 3.4% to $5.7 billion, while exports jumped 48.6% to $958 million.
