Ten more trade associations have joined the call for the immediate removal of individual motor carriers’ safety management scores from all public web sites maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and other governmental agencies.

Those groups signing a Sept. 17 letter to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said they have for several years made a case against the Compliance, Safety, Accountability scoring system that has resulted in carriers losing business and shippers and brokers exposed to greater tort liability.

“They have made this case in writing to the administrator, in meetings with the Agency, in hearings before the Small Business Administration, in Congressional testimony, and in declarations before the agency’s own Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee – all to no avail,” the letter said.

“Clearly, SMS methodology and published SMS scores have not stood the test of time nor withstood scrutiny by industry and independent government agencies.”

Last month, a group of trucker trade groups, including American Trucking Associations and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, also asked that the safety scores be taken down from the FMCSA web site.

Signatories on the new letter included Alliance for Safe, Efficient and Competitive Truck Transportation; National Association of Small Trucking Companies; Airforwarders Association; California Construction Trucking Association; Air & Expedited Motor Carrier Association; Auto Haulers Association of America; The Expedite Alliance of North America; American Home Furnishings Alliance; The Transportation Loss Prevention & Security Association and Jose Gonzalez, LLUSCBA Customs Committee Chair.
