Truck drivers and others who use the Martin Luther King Bridge to cross the Mississippi River in St. Louis will have to use an alternate route for the next four months beginning July 20.

The closure will include the time period when city hosts the National Truck Driving Championships (Aug. 11-15).

The bridge, which connects St. Louis to East St. Louis, Illinois, is undergoing $16 million of improvements.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has recommended that motorists use the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge (Interstate 70)  instead. That bridge handles about 40,000 drivers daily, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
