Midwest Snow Storm Headed for Northeast
A large snow storm continued to dump snow across much of the Midwest Wednesday and will reach New York and New England Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
The National Weather Service expected more than a foot of snow in parts of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa Wednesday, while 50 mph wind will build snow drifts 8 to 15 feet tall on roads.
The snow has caused Iowa to close an 18-mile section of Interstate 80 just east of Newton Wednesday morning, AP said. The Iowa Department of Transportation also stopped plowing more than 60 miles of Interstate 35 in the state due to blowing snow that makes the highway impassable.
Blizzard warnings cover parts of Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas and Minnesota, where the storm had already dumped 4 to 6 inches of snow, AP said.
By Thursday, the storm will continue to move east to New York, where NWS predicts up to a foot of snow. Near the Great Lakes, the forecast is for more than three feet by the end of the week.
The storm will then reach Maine and New Hampshire by Thursday night, and NWS predicts it will drop 6 to 10 inches of snow there, AP said. It will likely hit two thirds of the country by Thursday night, an NWS meteorologist said.
Icy conditions were to blame for road closings on Interstate 5 in California and Interstate 40 in Arizona while the storm was over those states, AP said. Both of those roads re-opened Tuesday.
