Trucking supplier Meritor Inc. announced the 1 millionth Meritor Tire Inflation System by P.S.I. was manufactured and then disassembled to become part of monitoring systems on 31 trailers used by fleet customers and made by seven trailer makers.

The part, which Pressure Systems International makes exclusively for Meritor, was launched 23 years ago, Meritor said in a release.

By maintaining proper pressure, the system helps extend tire life by 10% and reduce maintenance costs, as well as the risk of roadside tire issues, Meritor said, adding that the system increases fuel economy by an average of 1.4%, according to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration study.

“The fact that now over 1 million systems have been produced is a true testament to the safety and environmental impact automatic tire inflation systems are having on transportation,” American Trucking Associations President Bill Graves said in a statement.
