The Georgia Transportation Board elected Russell McMurry as the state’s transportation commissioner, effective immediately, the board said in a Jan. 20 statement.

A 25-year veteran of the Georgia Department of Transportation, McMurry was elected unanimously by the 14-member board and will oversee an annual budget of more than $2 billion and have more than 4,100 employees working for him.

McMurry succeeds Keith Golden, who served as commissioner for nearly three years and ends his tenure at the Georgia DOT on Jan. 31.

In December, McMurry was chosen by Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to be the department’s next planning director after serving for two years as its chief engineer – during which time he was responsible for managing the engineering, construction, operations, intermodal and other divisions. McMurry’s promotion means Deal will have to select a new planning director nominee to be confirmed by the General Assembly transportation committees.

McMurry is a graduate of Georgia Southern University and is a registered professional engineer.
