Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed a bill April 5 that aims to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 40% by 2030 compared with the state’s GHG output in 2006.

“Clean diesel stands ready to deliver significant fuel savings and climate benefits to the state,” said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. “Diesel engines and the vehicles and equipment they power have been recognized for over a century for their efficiency. Thanks to enormous advances in clean diesel technology, engines that meet recent emissions standards result in near-zero emissions and provide further fuel economy benefits.”

Schaffer noted that Maryland beats the national average in share of clean diesel commercial vehicles in operation with 128,000. The national average is 25.7% for model year 2010 and newer for diesel commercial vehicles and the average in Maryland is 28.6%.

He added that transportation-related emissions rank as the second-leading source of GHG emissions in Maryland and that diesel commercial vehicles rank as the second-leading source of such emissions behind gasoline-powered passenger cars and light trucks.
