otal air cargo shipments rose 3.1% in March compared with a year earlier, following a 1.3% year-over-year drop in February, the Air Transport Association reported.
Domestic shipments increased 2.2%, while international shipments rose 3.9%, the trade group said in its monthly report.
Air cargo shipments always have a trucking component, since air carriers use trucks for local and regional ground transportation.
International shipments across the Pacific rose 4.8% and for the Atlantic increased 4.3% in March, the group said. Latin American shipments fell 1.9%.
Overall March cargo shipments increased to 2.216 billion revenue ton-miles. A revenue ton-mile is the revenue generated by carrying one ton of freight one mile.
