Manufacturing activity in the New York region increased in November, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said.

The “Empire State Index,” generally the first economic indicator in a given month, increased to a 10.2 reading from 6.2 in October, the regional Fed said Nov. 17.

It reached a five-year high of 27.5 in September, the Associated Press reported. Readings greater than zero show expansion.

New orders increased to 9.1 in November after declining the prior month. An index measuring expected business conditions in the next six months increased to the highest level since January 2012.

Manufacturing is one of trucking’s largest and most important customers.
