ack Trucks Inc. is raising employment at its manufacturing plants due to strong demand for its heavy-duty trucks, the Associated Press reported Friday.

Mack posted the highest gain of all Class 8 manufacturers in March, selling 2,467 trucks, a 47.4% increase from last March, according to data from Ward’s Communications.

In the past 15 months, Mack has added 275 workers at its Hagerstown, Md., power train factory, lifting employment at the plant to 1,522 as of the end of March, AP said. It added 213 assembly jobs at its plant in Macungie, Pa., bringing employment there to 975, AP reported.

Employment at sister company Volvo Trucks North America’s New River Valley plant in Dublin, Va., has risen to 3,000 from 2,200 in the past year, VTNA spokesman James McNamara told AP.

A Mack spokesman told AP sales are rebounding from a slump several years ago due to a weaker economy and hesitation among customers to be the first to buy buyers of trucks with less-polluting diesel engines required under by the Environmental Protection Agency starting in 2002.
