LTLs Explore Next-Day Deliveries
EW YORK — In an effort to take advantage of what analysts are calling the fastest-growing segment of the less-than-truckload market, three carriers said they were exploring next-day market ventures, with at least one planning to launch a pilot program later this year.
Executives of Yellow Corp., Roadway Corp. and Old Dominion Freight Line told investors and analysts at a Bear, Stearns investment forum last month that they were outlining plans for expanding into the next-day market.
“At the end of the day, the ability to compete in [next-day] is very important,” Yellow Chairman and Chief Executive William D. Zollars said. “The real question is, can we do that in real life?”
