Letters to the Editor: 68 Miles Per Hour (Cont.'d)
f American Trucking Associations is so big on safety, why doesn’t it go after everyone — cars, trucks, pickup trucks and foreign cars. Make everyone do no more than 68 mph and this country would cut back on all accidents. (Click here for previous coverage.)
A national speed limit of 68 mph would save lots of fuel — and the cops would lose out on all that revenue because nobody would be getting high-speed driving awards.
Why just go after a small percentage and not the whole pie? I hear that truck drivers have fewer accidents than the four-wheelers, who cause 90% of accidents involving trucks.

If there are good reasons to make all trucks go 68 mph, as some large fleets are saying, then let us also consider other standards that would help highway safety and efficiency. These would include:
• A minimum of 550 horsepower and 13 gears, to keep traffic moving.
• Extra marker lights on all sides of the truck and trailer, for visibility.
• Chrome mudflap weights on all flaps, to reduce highway spray.
For owner-operators in America, this is business as usual — the way 68 mph is for the big fleets.
