Letter to the Editor: Safety Rules

y primary concern is, and always will be, safety. My feeling is that government and safety departments are always trying to find better ways to improve driving techniques and modify equipment to make the road safer.

I commend these people for their efforts. However, I have seen, in everyday driving on interstate highways, automobiles driving in passing lanes more slowly than they should be, and automobiles cutting in front of trucks.

I was on my state’s Department of Motor Vehicles Web site and was looking at the penalties for passing a school bus, speeding and a number of other violations that would give the violator an 11-year reckless driving record. My feeling is that there should be strict rules for all those who drive, regardless of the potential of a vehicle’s chance of destruction.

I feel that we as safety-minded people should look at all drivers, and not just the ones who have 40,000-pound loads. A personal suggestion is to hold drivers accountable for driving 50 mph in the passing lane when the speed limit is 65.
