Letter to the Editor: Diesel Prices

he headline on your Web site said "Diesel Price Plunges 4.7 Cents to $2.069." Can you remember what you said when fuel was rising 10 cents in a week? Was the verb as descriptive as "plunges"?

The oil companies want us to believe that when it goes down it plunges and when it goes up it is just another “increase.” I think that as part of the news media you should bear some responsibility as to the accuracy of the verbs used.

I understand that the news media have no control over fuel pricing, but it can report that diesel prices “skyrocketed” 4.7 cents when it goes up, and that it “decreased” 4.7 cents, but is still 34% higher than it was a year ago.
