Jacksonville Bridge Closed After Struck by Ship

The Mathews Bridge, a major east-west artery in Jacksonville, Fla., is closed indefinitely after being struck by a ship Sept. 26, the Associated Press reported.

The bridge over the St. Johns River sustained a “significant hit” to the center span and is unable to carry traffic while crews make repairs, which could take more than a week, AP said. The state’s Department of Transportation fears the weight from vehicles could further damage the structure.

About 109,000 vehicles used the bridge each day. Traffic is being detoured on the Hart Bridge that carries U.S. Route 1 and the Fuller Warren Bridge that carries Interstate 95.
