Intermodal Rail Traffic Rises 7%

U.S. rail intermodal traffic rose 7% in the week ended March 14 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Railroads moved 274,175 intermodal trailers and containers, AAR said March 18 in its weekly report. The growth follows a 4% rise the prior week that was the first increase in four weeks.

Rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, declined 3.5% year-over-year to 278,856 carloads.

Among the 10 commodity groups AAR tracks, two increased over last year: Grain rose 11.2%, and miscellaneous carloads increased 16.7%.



Intermodal volume for 13 reporting North America railroads declined 0.9% to 374,693 trailers and containers.

Canadian railroads moved 58,541 intermodal units, a 12.1% rise. Mexican rail moved 11,314 units, a 12.8% increase from the same time last year.

Year-to-date U.S. intermodal volume declined 1.1% to 2.46 million units.
