Intermodal, Rail Carload Volumes Increase for Week

Weekly intermodal volume increased by 1.7% to 254,266 units for the week Saturday from the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads said.

U.S. rail carload traffic rose by 0.5% to 543,145 units, AAR said in its weekly report.

Four of the 10 carload commodity groups tracked by AAR posted increases, led by petroleum and petroleum products, which rose 35.6%. Commodities showing a decrease included grain, which fell 12.1%.

For the first 24 weeks of the year, U.S. railroads moved 5.77 million intermodal containers and trailers, up 3.9% from last year. Carload traffic dipped 1.6% to 6.65 million units.
