urricane Emily slammed into northeastern Mexico and the U.S. border area early Wednesday, forcing thousands of people to evacuate and threatening mudslides, news services reported.

The eye of the hurricane hit the Mexican coast about 75 miles south of the Texas-Mexico border as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 miles per hour, Reuters reported.

Forecasters said Emily could cause chaos in the mountains of northeastern Mexico as it moves slowly inland, dumping heavy rain, Reuters said.

Huge waves pounded the south Texas coastline and experts said the hurricane could trigger tornadoes later in the day.

Emily killed five people in Jamaica in its swing through the Caribbean as a stronger Category 4 hurricane, and several people died in Mexico in incidents indirectly caused by the storm, Reuters reported.
