House Moving to Tighten Port, Container Security

The House of Representatives will probably approve a port security measure later this month that requires a national transportation worker identification badge.

That will clear the way for a conference to work out differences with legislation the Senate has passed, House aides said.

As part of its focus on anti-terrorism, the narrowly crafted House bill, known as the Maritime Transportation Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002, also would direct the government to develop standards to seal and monitor shipping containers to prevent tampering.
