The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted a sleeper berth hours-of-service exemption to McKee Foods Transportation.

The one-year exemption will allow the carrier’s team drivers engaged in delivery and backhaul operations to take the equivalent of 10 consecutive hours off duty by splitting sleeper berth time into two periods totaling 10 hours, provided neither of the two periods is less than 3 hours.

McKee Foods is the maker of the Little Debbie brand, Drake’s and Sunbelt granola and cereal.

Current HOS rules require that all sleeper berth rest regimens include, in part, the use of a sleeper berth for at least 8 hours – combined with a separate period of at least 2 hours, either in the sleeper berth, off-duty or some combination of both – to gain the equivalent of at least 10 consecutive hours off duty.

McKee Foods is ranked No. 92 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian private carriers.
