eavy rains left over from Tropical Storm Tammy caused flooding along the East Coast from North Carolina to New Hampshire over the weekend, forcing some evacuations, knocking out power and making many roads impassable, the Associated Press reported.

Weather-related highway fatalities occurred in several states on the East Coast, AP said.

North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley (D) warned residents to stay away from swollen rivers and creeks, already high from rain from Hurricane Ophelia in September. The state's transportation department reported 41 roads closed because of flooding.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) returned from Europe to take charge of relief efforts in the state, declaring a state of emergency and activating 500 National Guard members for assistance, AP reported.

The National Weather Service reported that more than 5 inches of rain fell in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday. North Carolina's Brunswick and Pender counties saw between 7 and 10 inches of rain in four days. Allentown, Pa., received 10 inches between Friday and Saturday, AP said.
