rake and transmission products supplier Hawk Corp. said Tuesday it was increasing its first-quarter net sales and operations income guidance due to strong markets including in heavy-duty trucking.

The company said it expects to report record first-quarter 2005 net sales of about $72.5 million, about a 20% increase over its net sales in last year's first quarter.

In its previous guidance Hawk anticipated its net sales to increase by 13% to 15% for the first quarter of 2005.

Hawk said it was also increasing its previously announced guidance for income from operations to 9% to 12%, from 5% to 7%, putting income from operations for the first quarter to between $6.2 million and $6.4 million.

The majority of Hawk's markets continue to outperform previous expectations, including construction and mining equipment, heavy-duty trucking, fluid power and aerospace, the company said.

Its friction products group supplies friction materials for brakes, clutches and transmissions used in airplanes, trucks, construction equipment, farm equipment and recreational vehicles.
