nited Steelworkers approved by a two-to-one margin a new master contract with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. covering about 12,600 employees at 12 tire and engineered products plants in the United States, Bloomberg reported Friday.
The three-year contract will also allow the Akron, Ohio-based tire manufacturer to shut down its Tyler, Texas plant, though the deal pushes that facility’s expected closing date forward to 2008 from the second quarter of 2007, Bloomberg said.
Plants covered under the new contract include Akron, Ohio; Buffalo, N.Y.; Danville, Va.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Gadsden, Ala.; Lincoln, Neb.; Marysville, Ohio; St. Marys, Ohio; Sun Prairie, Wis.; Topeka, Kan.; Tyler, Texas; and Union City, Tenn.
Goodyear’s previous labor agreement with United Steelworkers expired July 22. Goodyear USW members had been on strike since October 5.
