oodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plans to close a factory in Tyler, Texas, eliminating 1,100 jobs in the process, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The plant closure follows a strike by members of the United Steelworkers union which affected 12 of Goodyear’s U.S. facilities, AP said. (Click here for previous coverage.)

Goodyear expects that closing the Tyler plant, which makes mostly tires for light trucks and passenger vehicles, will save the company about $50 million a year, AP said.

The manufacturer did not say when it planned to close the facility, AP reported.

Also in connection with the strike, the tire manufacturer laid off 330 hourly workers in mid October as part of a temporary idling of a North Carolina factory that manufactures steel wiring used in commercial truck tires, AP reported. (Click here for previous coverage.)
