GE Subsidiary Won’t Appeal Order Blocking Megaload Shipments

A General Electric Co. subsidiary has opted not to appeal a federal court injunction that barred it from shipping megaloads destined for Canadian oil and gas fields along a remote Idaho highway through Nez Perce tribal lands, Reuters reported.

A federal judge ordered in September that shipments along U.S. Highway 12 be blocked until the U.S. Forest Service studied the environmental effects. The GE affiliate, Resources Conservation Co. International, said Oct. 25 it withdrew its appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to consider other options and avoid delaying shipments of its water purification system to tar sands in Alberta, Reuters reported.

GE estimated that rerouting the transports will cost $5.1 million.
