Fuel Tax Hikes, Cuts in Road Projects Seen as Cure for States' Budgets

A growing number of states are considering raising their fuel taxes or cutting road projects as the floundering economy eats into revenues.

In New York, the state most prominently affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Gov. George Pataki’s office predicted a revenue loss of up to $6 billion for the next fiscal year, and the coming budget will reflect that loss.

State agencies were told to tighten their belts because Pataki is serious about holding down costs, New York State Motor Truck Association President William B. Joyce Jr. told Transport Topics.
