Freight-Handling Innovations Can Help Firms Reduce Costs

Innovations in handling freight are increasingly being used by trucking companies to boost efficiency and reduce worker compensation payouts and cargo damage claims, according to industry spokesmen interviewed by Transport Topics.

More rugged forklifts with redesigned controls; racks and load securement bars and air bags; easier-to-operate hand trucks, truck levelers and dock levelers; and greater use of cellular phones and information technology are some of the tools with which industry is cutting costs.

“There is an increased awareness of safety among companies and employees,” said Andrew Morrow, general manager of Blue Giant Equipment Corp., South Brampton, Ontario. “You are hearing more and more about ergonomics,” the science of body movement and stresses in working conditions and designs for better equipment.
