U.S. Department of Transportation
Anthony Foxx was formally sworn in as secretary of transportation by Vice President Joe Biden, a week after initially taking the oath of office during a private ceremony.
Biden described Foxx as a man who “has transportation in his blood; it runs in his veins.”
As a councilman and as mayor, Biden said Foxx has had a “laser focus” on transportation. “He gets it; he knows what to do,” the vice president said.
Foxx said at Thursday’s ceremony — held at U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington — that his great-grandfather was a truck driver, and he introduced the audience to his 90-year-old grandmother.
“Her father, Pete Kelly, had a truck and used that truck to raise 13 children and send them all to college,” Foxx said. “Transportation is the best example of what one generation can do for the next. So transportation is a lifeline to families all across this country.”
Foxx has also made his first few posts to DOT’s “Fast Lane”blog, in which he said he planned to focus on safety, efficiency and improving the performance of existing and future transportation systems.
