FMCSA to Train Inspectors to Gather a Truck's Technological Data

A new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration course will emphasize hands-on training with automatic onboard recording devices to help safety officials speed the pace of inspections, according to the course’s lead instructor.

The course is designed to familiarize inspectors with basic technology the trucking industry employs. A key subject covered will be use of the electronic vehicle monitoring systems for automatic driver hours-of-service reporting.

According to Dennis McGee, a program specialist with FMCSA’s Pennsylvania office, some trucks don’t get rated as highly as they might for safety status scores because inspectors are unfamiliar with the technology and don’t bother to thoroughly examine computer-based logs.
