FMCSA Renews Vision Waivers for 21 Commercial Drivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Jan. 6 announced that 21 visually impaired commercial drivers have met the physical requirements to be allowed to continue to operate vehicles on highways.

The agency said it concluded the 21 drivers demonstrated a level of safety equivalent to or greater than what is required to operate a commercial vehicle. The exemptions, set to take effect Jan. 31, are valid for two years. The notice was published in the Federal Register.

During the exemption period, the drivers will be required to undergo an annual physical examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist and certify that they meet federal standards. The drivers also must present employers with a copy of their annual medical certification. The exemptions will be rescinded if drivers fail to meet federal standards.

The public is allowed to share comments about this decision through the Federal Register by Feb. 5. Last summer, FMCSA announced that it approved the exemption of 52 individuals who are blind or partially blind in one eye.
