FMCSA Commissions Study on CSA

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on March 7 announced that it had commissioned a study of its safety performance scoring system.

Under the 2015 FAST Act highway law, the agency is required to review its Compliance, Safety, Accountability program. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has been commissioned to carry out the review of CSA.

The focus of the review will be on CSA’s safety methodology as well as safety indicators for motor carriers.

At a hearing in January, FMCSA Acting Administrator Scott Darling told a Senate panel the agency would pursue the CSA program’s review. FMCSA removed CSA scores from public view in December soon after the FAST Act’s enactment.

Key trucking executives have criticized the accuracy of CSA scores.
