ort Everglades in Broward County, Fla., has set a record for containerized cargo, due to increased trade with Latin America and Asia, the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel reported.

The port handled more than 5 million tons of containerized cargo for the first time in its fiscal year that just ended, which was 10% higher than last year, the paper said. Port officials said they expect tonnage to increase another 10% this fiscal year.

ome of the gains come from clients relocating from the Port of Miami, where space is tighter and truckers have complained of longer delays and greater traffic jams, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Port Everglades also picked up some freight rerouted from the Gulfport, Miss., port that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, officials told the paper.
