Federal Highway Administration interim report on leaks in Boston’s Central Artery Tunnel project concludes that the project is structurally sound but recommends that work continue with inspections and repairs.

The FHWA said the Boston’s “Big Dig” project remains safe for traffic but that work is needed to put a stop to any and all leaks as soon as possible.

The agency launched the investigation after leaks were discovered in the $14.6 billion project, news reports said.

Massachusetts officials have launched investigations into the construction job, which has been beset by cost overruns, delays and water leaks that have led some motorists to question the safety of the tunnels, the Associated Press reported.

FHWA's interim report further recommends project authorities develop an inspection program to detect and deter any future leak problems.

The agency, part of the Deparment of Transportaiton, said it will continue monitoring the project to ensure that it remains safe and open to traffic and that the taxpayers’ investment is protected.

It said it would issue a follow-up report later this year after all inspections and repairs are completed.
