FedEx Corp. said Wednesday it plans to improve the fuel efficiency of its FedEx Express vehicle fleet by 20% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its aircraft fleet by 20% by 2020.

The goals were outlined in its FedEx 2008 Global Citizenship Report released Wednesday. Since 2005, the company said has reduced aircraft carbon dioxide emissions by 3.7% per available ton mile and improved FedEx Express vehicle fuel efficiency by 13.7%.

FedEx said it operates the largest fleet of commercial hybrid electric trucks in North America, with more than 170 vehicles.

FedEx Express has worked to optimize its delivery routes to ensure the most efficiently sized vehicles are used on each route. As a result, more than 25% of the FedEx Express fleet has been converted to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, saving more than 45 million gallons of fuel in the past three years, the company said.

It will acquire Boeing 777 aircraft that provide greater payload capacity and use 18% less fuel on average than the MD-11 aircraft currently in operation and will “significantly reduce carbon emissions,” the company said.

FedEx Corp. is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
