FedEx customers will be able to drop off and pick up packages at “thousands of Walgreens” locations nationwide, the shipping giant said Jan. 11.

FedEx Corp. ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The initial, "small-scale" rollout will be done this spring, with stores added in the coming months, Walgreens said in a statement. Walgreens, based in Deerfield, Illinois, plans to make the program available at nearly 8,000 stores by the fall of  2018.

The “long-term” agreement was struck after FedEx conducted research that showed customers rank pharmacies as “a preferred location for accessing their e-commerce shipments,” Raj Subramaniam, FedEx chief marketing and communications officer, said in a statement.

Financial terms of the alliance weren't disclosed.
