edEx Freight said Friday it will implement a 5.6% general rate increase effective May 16.

The less-than-truckload unit of FedEx Corp. said in a statement the increase will apply to interstate and intrastate shipments and select shipments between the United States and Mexico and Canada.

“Our promise of quality and service requires significant investments in new and upgraded facilities,” said Dennie Carey, senior vice president of marketing for FedEx Freight.

He cited substantially higher tolling of new and existing highways and costs associated with new driver security requirements.

FedEx Corp. is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
