FedEx Freight said drivers at West Virginia terminals in Charleston and Parkersburg rejected Teamsters representation, marking the union's latest defeats in the ongoing organizing battle.

In addition, FedEx Freight said the Teamsters withdrew a petition for a scheduled Jan. 22 election at Clarksburg, West Virginia.

The company has won five contested elections, and the union has prevailed in three. In addition to the losses, the union has withdrawn petitions for elections at six locations.

“We are proud of our drivers in West Virginia for making informed decisions,” Executive Vice President Pat Reed said.  “We continue to work with our team to ensure that FedEx Freight remains a great place to work.”

FedEx Freight is the largest less-than-truckload carrier and a unit of FedEx Corp., which ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The union also is seeking to organize Con-way Freight, the third-largest less-than-truckload carrier and the largest subsidiary of No. 4 Con-way Inc. Con-way also has beaten the union in five of eight elections.

The FedEx results were released several days after the balloting, the company said in a statement.

FedEx spokeswoman Melissa Charbonneau told Transport Topics the release of the Charleston tally was delayed for six days while the National Labor Relations Board considered the company’s request to include dockworkers in the voter group.
