edEx Freight and ABF Freight System each said they would limit their fuel surcharges through early October days to help customers hit by high fuel prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

FedEx Freight, the less-than-truckload unit of FedEx Corp., said its fuel surcharge, which is updated weekly, will not exceed the most current pre-hurricane levels for the next 30 days.

The limit does not apply to surcharges in place for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground, two units of FedEx Corp., ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

ABF Freight System, a unit of Arkansas Best Corp., No. 17 on the TT 100, said it would limit its standard fuel surcharge through Oct. 4.

The company said in a statement its fuel surcharge would not exceed the pre-Katrina level established last Monday.
