ales of existing homes held steady at the second-highest level on record last month, at a 7.28 million annual rate, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday.

The rise was slightly more than analysts’ forecasts of a drop to 7.2 million from August's rate, which had been originally reported at 7.29 million.

The September rate was second only to June’s 7.35 million rate.

Sales rose in the South and Northeast, and fell in the West and Midwest regions, NAR said.

Existing home sales account for 85% of the residential real estate market in the United States. When a home is sold, trucks are usually used to transport household appliances and furniture.
