nvironmental Protection Agency Administrator Steve Johnson said Wednesday EPA was temporarily waiving some anti-pollution standards for gasoline and diesel fuels in all states to ensure that the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina does not result in serious fuel supply disruptions around the country.

Johnson said that he had initially issued waivers for the four states mainly affected by Katrina — Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida — but Wednesday extended waivers to all U.S. states and territories.

The waivers are in effect through Sept. 15, and apply only to volatility standards — the rate at which fuel evaporates — and the amount of sulfur in fuel.

“It has become clear that the consequences of the hurricane have become more widespread. So today, I’m sending letters to the governors of the remaining 46 states and territories providing temporary relief from volatility and sulfur standards. This action will result in a needed increase in fuel supply,” Johnson said.

“These waivers are necessary to ensure that fuel is available throughout the country to address public health issues and emergency vehicle supply needs,” he said in a statement.
