Prime Inc. challenged other fleets to send their fittest male and female truck drivers to its third annual “Fittest Trucker In America” competition.

The competition will take place Aug. 29 at Prime’s headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, and the company said it is reserving 30 spots for drivers from other fleets across the country.

“There is an obesity epidemic leading to premature death in the trucking industry, and as a consequence, helping drivers lose weight has grown in popularity,” Siphiwe Baleka, Prime’s driver health, fitness coach and creator of the competition, said in a statement.

“There are weight-loss competitions for drivers but nothing to showcase those drivers who are managing to maintain very high levels of fitness while living on the road. This competition is designed to identify who is the fittest truck driver in America,” Baleka said.

Prime said its goal for the 2015 event is to make it a truly national competition.

“What fleet wouldn’t be proud to boast it has the fittest truck driver in America?” Baleka said.

In 2014, Peterbilt sponsored the competition and put up prize money, claimed by 27-year-old Prime driver Randee Lewis.

Men’s Health magazine featured the winner and third-place finisher of the 2013 Fittest of the Fleet competition, Rodney McCloud and Justin Boschee, both drivers for Prime.
