shortage of qualified drivers took the number one spot on the American Transportation Research Institute’s 2006 list of the top 10 concerns facing the trucking industry.

The driver shortage issue moved up from the number two spot on last year’s list and was ranked the first, second or third top issue by 57% of those polled, ATRI said Sunday in a statement during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in Dallas.

Fuel issues and driver retention were ranked second and third on the list, respectively. Issues surrounding hours of service regulations ranked fourth, while roadway congestion took the fifth spot.

Concerns about government regulation, tort reform, tolls and highway funding and environmental issues rounded out the list.
