The U.S. Department of Transportation’s undersecretary for policy, Peter Rogoff, will step down in a few weeks to take over operations at Seattle’s transit agency.

Sound Transit announced last week it had unanimously selected Rogoff to be its next CEO.

“Rogoff will bring the experience this region needs to expand rail and bus service for our fast-growing cities,” Sound Transit board chairman and King County executive Dow Constantine said. “Mobility is our linchpin for a prosperous and sustainable future. Today, we welcome one of America’s most seasoned transportation leaders.”

Rogoff, the third highest-ranking officer at DOT, would succeed Joni Earl, who is expected to retire in the spring.

At DOT, Rogoff oversaw the agency’s efforts to boost interconnectivity along freight and transit modes. He previously led the Federal Transit Administration and had been a senior staffer for senators on the Appropriations Committee.

“Sound Transit has earned the public’s trust and a nationwide reputation for its success delivering transit infrastructure for the people of Puget Sound,” Rogoff said. “As its new CEO, I am excited and determined to expand on that legacy as we build projects and expand service in all three counties.”
