A research division at the U.S. Department of Transportation that examines ways to improve freight connectivity and logistics named a new director July 28.

Anne Aylward was tapped to lead Volpe, the National Transportation Systems Center, said Greg Winfree, DOT's assistant secretary for research and technology.

“Anne is a nationally recognized expert in intermodal transportation with decades of experience in planning, policy and research management," Winfree said. "She has served at Volpe for over 20 years, where she has made substantial contributions to DOT priorities in leading Volpe’s research and technology staff — 490 analysts, economists, engineers, planners, scientists and system developers."

During her tenure at Volpe, Aylward co-led projects, such as the Beyond Traffic 30-year outlook that stressed the need to add capacity for increases in freight demand, and producing the first national freight strategic plan.

“We support the cutting-edge work of DOT agencies and many others in improving the efficiency and safety of planes, trains, cars, trucks, pipelines and water vessels across America. But all of our work comes back to our people, and it is an honor for me to have the opportunity to lead them,” Aylward said.

Volpe, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is tasked with advancing safety technology and improve logistics innovation.
