DOT Awards $2 Million to California for Roads, Bridges Damaged by Fires

California will receive $2 million in aid to assist agencies with repairing roadways, bridges and infrastructure damaged by recent wildfires, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Sept. 22.

State officials indicated the federal aid would go toward repairing pavement, signs and guardrails in the Northern region. Fires that began Sept. 12 around Napa and Sonoma counties have affected about 74,000 acres. The fires damaged several highways along the Northern part of the state, such as state Route 29.

“We want to ensure that everyone in this region of California has access to safe roads and safe bridges — and this funding will help ensure that travel can get back to normal as soon as possible,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

“People’s lives are greatly affected when the highways they rely upon for daily travel are destroyed,” Federal Highway Administration chief Gregory Nadeau said.
